“It was quite an amazing weekend from start to finish. I cannot really say much more, we had a really good car, the whole team was super strong, we had a good time in the car and it is not so common anymore that you can be the whole weekend so much faster than the others. I don’t know if it’s my best victory ever, but for sure one of the best ones. Portugal means back on gravel, we have a different spec from the gravel tire also, so there are new things to learn.”
“Ha sido un fin de semana increíble de principio a fin. Realmente no puedo decir mucho más, teníamos un coche muy bueno, todo el equipo era muy fuerte, nos lo pasamos muy bien en el coche y ya no es tan común que puedas ser todo el fin de semana mucho más rápido que los demás. No sé si es mi mejor victoria, pero seguro que es una de las mejores. Portugal significa volver a la grava, tenemos una especificación diferente del neumático de grava también, así que hay cosas nuevas que aprender.”

“I trust my feeling. If it tells me I can push it I do it, if I think I still need to wait for something then I wait. It has been enjoyable, the weather was making it a little bit easier than what we saw during the recce, because if it started raining it would have been a completely different rally. Well done to our team for giving us the best tools to fight this weekend.”
“Confío en mis sensaciones. Si me dice que puedo apretar lo hago, si creo que todavía tengo que esperar algo entonces espero. Ha sido agradable, el tiempo lo ha hecho un poco más fácil de lo que vimos durante el reconocimiento, porque si se hubiera puesto a llover habría sido un rally completamente diferente. Enhorabuena a nuestro equipo por darnos las mejores herramientas para luchar este fin de semana.”

“Naturally, I am a bit disappointed to lose out to Sébastien in the Super Sunday and the Wolf Power Stage today. It was obviously pretty close, it is like that. Still it is a decent haul of point but in these circumstances we clearly had a faster car, I have to be content with the end result.”
“Naturalmente, estoy un poco decepcionado por perder hoy frente a Sébastien en la Super Sunday y la Wolf Power Stage. Evidentemente, ha estado muy reñido. Aún así es un buen botín de puntos, pero en estas circunstancias teníamos claramente un coche más rápido, tengo que estar contento con el resultado final.”

“First of all, big congratulations to the team with that 1-2-3-4 finish in a new rally in the WRC calendar in Islas Canarias. I am very happy to be part of that. Personally, it was not an easy start to the weekend, struggling a lot with the car. After that, we got more confortable, although I was missing a little bit of pace. It is a small step forward to get some pace, we wanted to get consistence and a good rally. This is exactly what we have done this weekend, so thanks for the team. Next one should be a lot easier.”
“En primer lugar, muchas felicidades al equipo por este 1-2-3-4 en un nuevo rally del calendario del WRC en Islas Canarias. Estoy muy contento de formar parte de ello. Personalmente, no fue un comienzo fácil del fin de semana, con muchos problemas con el coche. Después nos hemos ido encontrando más cómodos, aunque me ha faltado un poco de ritmo. Es un pequeño paso adelante conseguir algo de ritmo, queríamos conseguir consistencia y un buen rally. Eso es exactamente lo que hemos hecho este fin de semana, así que gracias al equipo. El próximo debería ser mucho más fácil.”

“It was quite positive, we were also testing in a different kind of roads with different grip, smooth tarmac, long corners. It is always difficult and I wish we have tested in the same island. This rally is so unique, we still need to learn because Japan will be similar, because Central Europe Rally is so different. I feel good, it was a really last demanding stage, I was flat out everywhere trying to beat the Toyota. We beat one of them and got one extra point we were not expecting, so at least one positive.”
“Ha sido bastante positivo, también hemos probado un tipo diferente de carreteras con diferente agarre, asfalto liso, curvas largas. Siempre es difícil y ojalá hubiéramos probado en la misma isla. Este rally es único, todavía tenemos que aprender porque Japón será parecido, porque el Rally de Europa Central es muy diferente. Me siento bien, ha sido una última etapa muy exigente, he ido a tope por todas partes intentando batir a los Toyota. Ganamos a uno de ellos y conseguimos un punto extra que no esperábamos, así que al menos conseguimos un punto.”

“It is just clear that we were not well prepared for this rally. We can see that the pace of the car was in this very car performance event. Our rivals were very strong and well prepared, so that was the big difference. Definitely, it is not so clear what we need to do to beat the pace of Toyota, they were really strong and I also thing that is not straightforward. Next is Portugal, is a rally that I enjoy, in rough gravel we have also been on a good level in the past. We need some more mileage, but I won’t do any national rally.”
“Está claro que no estábamos bien preparados para este rally. Podemos ver que el ritmo del coche era en este evento muy rendimiento del coche. Nuestros rivales eran muy fuertes y estaban bien preparados, así que esa fue la gran diferencia. Definitivamente, no está tan claro lo que tenemos que hacer para batir el ritmo de Toyota, eran realmente fuertes y también creo que no es sencillo. El siguiente es Portugal, es un rally que me gusta, en grava dura también hemos estado a un buen nivel en el pasado. Necesitamos algo más de kilometraje, pero no haré ningún rally nacional.”
Car 1. THIERRY NEUVILLE/MARTIJN WYDAEGHE
“Definitely a frustrating one for us. I must have clipped a stone or something, which damaged the tire. We got a puncture so we lost any hope of a positive ending of the rally, so I am even more disappointed by that, but that is part of rallying. It isn’t finished until you cross the finish line. I prefer to have a puncture this weekend than in Portugal, where we will be first. Toyota have reacted to the new tire much better than us. We saw a bit of that in Monte-Carlo and we can only give our feedback and tell them what we need to make the car fast, but if they can’t give us a fast car, it’s difficult. This weekend we were on completely different things and nothing was working, the pace was completely the same.”
“Definitivamente ha sido frustrante para nosotros. Debo de haber chocado con una piedra o algo así, que ha dañado el neumático. Hemos pinchado y hemos perdido toda esperanza de terminar el rally de forma positiva, así que estoy aún más decepcionado, pero eso forma parte del rally. No se acaba hasta que se cruza la línea de meta. Prefiero tener un pinchazo este fin de semana que en Portugal, donde seremos primeros. Toyota ha reaccionado al nuevo neumático mucho mejor que nosotros. Vimos un poco de eso en Montecarlo y sólo podemos dar nuestra opinión y decirles lo que necesitamos para que el coche sea rápido, pero si ellos no pueden darnos un coche rápido, es difícil. Este fin de semana estábamos con cosas completamente diferentes y nada funcionaba, el ritmo seguía siendo completamente el mismo.”

“Incredible feeling. I didn’t expect to win like that before the start. It’s so difficult to create a gap here in Canarias. When you have a 20 second gap, you don’t know if you can win the rally if you were to do any mistake.”
“Una sensación increíble. No esperaba ganar así antes de la salida. Es muy difícil abrir hueco aquí en Canarias. Cuando tienes una diferencia de 20 segundos, no sabes si puedes ganar el rally si cometes algún error.”

“When there are changes you always have to work and we didn’t have much time to make the new setup. But in any case, if I had understood the tire well, the difference would have been to improve the times and two places, to be 8th instead of 10th, but the rest are unreachable for me. I was happy, finishing in the top 10 has a completely different taste than when I was 25 years old. But I was looking forward to participating in this race, I have endured it with all my will and for the fans, because the people were pushing me”.
“Cuando hay cambios siempre tienes que trabajar y no hemos tenido mucho tiempo para hacer el setup nuevo. Pero en cualquier caso, si hubiera entendido bien el neumático, la diferencia hubiese sido mejorar los tiempos y dos puestos, quedar 8º en vez de 10º, pero el resto son inalcanzables para mí. Me quedé contento, quedarse entre los 10 primeros tiene un sabor completamente diferente a cuando tenía 25 años. Pero me hacía ilusión participar en esta prueba, lo he aguantado con todas mis ganas y por la afición, porque la gente me iba empujando.”
