Compliance with safety standards, a task for everyone

The Rally Islas Canarias is immersed in one of its most important editions. Valid for this year’s FIA European Rally Championship (ERC), the island event faces a promising future, but one that also depends on the behaviour of the fans who attend the special stages. On Saturday’s leg, remember to respect the instructions of the organization and the marshals.

This weekend's 48th Rally Islas Canarias is a prelude to the desired moment for the Canarian fans – the ascent to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Now, the leading figures of the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) are the ones fighting for a place in the island event's hall of fame. But, for next year's teams from the world championship to land in the Canarian Archipielago, safety standards governed by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) must be met first.

The event based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria attracts thousands of people, as was evident in Thursday's super special stage, which packed out the stands of the Gran Canaria Arena. For Saturday's leg, which will decide the winner of the international event, the presence of a significant number of spectators at the special stages is expected. And, for this reason, safety gains even more relevance, a key aspect to ensure the success of the competition and also of its future within the WRC.

As happened in the Saturday special stages, the roads will not open to the traffic until after the second pass of each stage. Spectators must be located in a safe place sixty minutes before the first vehicle sets off. Also, they must respect parking regulations. It is very important not to park, under any circumstances, on the edges of the roads, so as not to endanger the physical integrity of the participating teams.

The live broadcast of the stages through the Rally.TV platform allows the Race Direction to maintain continuous monitoring of the location of each fan. If they detect someone in prohibited areas from the control centre, they will decide to suspend or neutralize that very special stage. The members of the safety caravan and the route marshals will ensure the safety of everyone, so it is essential to listen to their instructions and follow them. Only a safe rally is a good rally!
