The moral commitment to some of the locations that this August suffered the fires that ravaged the summit of Gran Canaria has made the Organizing Committee maintain the basis of its itinerary next season. Institutions such as the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and those responsible for the FIA European Rally Championship support this measure aimed at supporting the economy of these populations.

The fires declared in Gran Canaria on August 10, 12 and 17 swept nearly 10,000 hectares in some of the most environmentally rich areas of the island. According to data from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the most punished municipality was that of Artenara with 60% of its affected area, followed by Valleseco, Agaete, Moya, Gáldar, Tejeda and San Mateo. Territories mostly that have been associated to the Rally Islas Canarias and with which the event has a moral debt in these difficult times.

Although, as every year, the Organizing Committee of the Rally Islas Canarias is already involved in the design of the route of the next edition and will announce it a few months before its dispute, it has been determined to keep intact the list of municipalities for those that will race. That is to say, in support of a good part of those territories of the island affected by the fires and that were represented in the itinerary of the 43rd edition that was held last May, facing the number 44 that will take place in 2020 the stages will vary, but these will be developed in the same municipalities.

Thus, the itinerary of the Rally Islas Canarias will be deployed through San Mateo, Tejeda, Moya, Gáldar and Valleseco, as well as Valsequillo, Arucas and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The organization is trying at all costs that Artenara maintains the prominence it has had in the prolegomena of the previous editions, but the stage that has been used for the collective test is today impracticable.

The Organizing Committee, through its president, Germán Morales, has already communicated the decision to the main institutions such as the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as the consistories of the rest of municipalities. From Eurosport Events, the organizer of the FIA ERC, the measure has been applauded, as its top leaders conveyed messages of concern and support during the days when the fire consumed part of the spectacular Gran Canaria summit.

The Rally Islas Canarias will represent another year to Spain in a 2020 calendar of the FIA European Rally Championship that will be announced in the coming weeks.
